Recap: Pirates 5, Mets 1

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets fall to the Pirates in the second game of the series 5-1

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • R.A. Dickey (2-6) started the game for the Mets and lasted 7 2/3 innings.  He allowed 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and stuck out 10
  • The Mets went into the 8th with a 1-0 lead with two outs left in the 8th the Pirates scored three runs.
  • With two strikes and two outs in the 8th Neil Walker drove home the go-ahead run with a two run single.
  • Daniel Murphy had another multi hit night, and now has 8 hits in his last 3 games.
  • The Mets have not hit a HR in their last 10 games
  • The Pirates won their first game at Citi Field in franchise history tonight

Some Thoughts:

What a shame R.A Dickey couldn't get the win tonight, in his first start since being injured in Chicago.  Dickey came out firing tonight especially with his knuckle ball, which was at its best.  Although Dickey almost came through in the 8th but fell a little short this start should be a step in the right direction to get him back to the form he was in last season

In his first start at third base Daniel Murphy showed some great defensive presence, along with his hot bat.  Murph had another multi hit night to make it 8 hits over his last 3 games. We might begin to see some more third base out of Murph before Wright returns.

It was great to see Bobby Parnell make his first appearance since April 19th.  Parnell got into a little trouble loading the bases only then to get Brandon Wood to pop up.  Tonight one of Parnell's fastballs reached the triple digits, which is great to see and insuring that his velocity is still there.

Next For The Mets:

Chris Capuano (3-5, 4.94 ERA) will start for the Mets tomorrow night against Kevin Correia(7-4, 3.44 ERA).  Projected game time is 7:10

Recap: Mets 7, Pirates 3

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets take the first game of the 4 game series against the Pirates 7-3.

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Dillon Gee (5-0, 3.83 ERA) got the start for the Mets tonight, and allowed five hits three runs, and a career high eight strikeouts.
  • Daniel MurphyRuben Tejada and Angel Pagan all had three hit nights.
  • The Mets scored two runs in the second without hitting it out of the infield.  First Jason Pridie struck out on a wild pitch, then Ruben Tejada hit an infield single.
  • Justin Turner added two more hits tonight, and his 21st RBI.  Turner is now hitting .337 which is the highest average for rookies.
  • The Mets tallied 15 hits tonight, and now they have 32 over the last two games.

Some Thoughts:

After Gee let a early home run tonight in the second, he quickly recovered in pitched an outstanding game.  Gee has been showing a ton of poise when he toes the rubber.  Tonight he also got the Pirates hitters to strike out eight times which is his career high.  Gee is the first pitcher since Jon Matlack to go 5-0 in his rookie season.

Thole did a great job against Daniel McCutchen who has given up one run the whole year before today when Thole hit a huge two RBI double.

I wonder what the Mets will do when Ike Davis and David Wright return from the DL because Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy have been hitting so well.

With David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Ike Davis all out of the lineup it was great to see the Mets rally around each other and dominate the Pirates.  The Mets are going to have to rally with a makeshift lineup and come up big till the key players return.

Terry's Thoughts:

  • Thole's at bat was huge, he is swinging the bat a lot better and his confidence has gone up
  • They have really rallied around each other and stepped up the hitting and defense
  • Comparing Tejada to Infante or Polanco a line drive hitter
  • Gee just keeps pitching and his pitches improve towards the end of the game

Next For The Mets:

R.A. Dickey will be facing James McDonald in the second game of the four game series against the Pirates.  Projected game time is 7:10 pm.

Recap: Mets 9, Phillies 5

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets avoided the sweep today at Citi Field with a dominate performance.

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Jon Niese (4-5) was brilliant in his 6 1/3 innings of work allowing 5 hits, and 1 unearned run.
  • Jose Reyes once again had a multi hit game he went 4-5 with two triples.
  • Justin Turner had a two hit afternoon raising his average to .330.
  • Daniel Murphy and Josh Thole both had three hit games.
  • The Mets managed to drive in 7 runs on two out at bats.

Some Thoughts:

Jon Niese looked fantastic today, only allowing 5 hits and 0 earned run.  Niese was in demand the whole day and managed to keep the Mets big lead.

Man has Jose Reyes really proved himself over the season so far.  Reyes is playing the best baseball he has played in so long if not ever.  With the trade rumors swirling he has lived up to his potential and made a case to stay in the place he loves...New York.

Something must of hit Josh Thole today and the whole lineup numerous players broke out of a shell today and really took a beating to the ball.  Watching Thole have three hits and three RBIs could be a sign that he is filling into the spot as a MLB catcher.

On another great note, the Mets did a great job with their two out hits today driving in 7 runs.

Next For The Mets:

Dillon Gee will face Charlie Morton to start off a four game series with the Pirates tomorrow night at Citi Field. Projected game time is 7:10 pm

Pre Game: Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose

Posted by Jake Lublin

“They just want me here, because they know I play the game the right way, and I try to give you everything that I have to this team, and to put a good show on the field. I’m the guy who plays hard every single day so I think the fans like that. When you give 100 percent every day, everybody’s going to like that. They see me healthy now…This year they see the real Jose Reyes.”

-Jose Reyes on staying in New York, New York Post

Yes we all want Jose to stay and honestly I think it would be worth to keep him.  Jose can make a team exiting and as we have seen this year when he is 100% you cant get enough of him.  Getting rid of Jose could be a good thing if you totally want to restructure the team, but keeping a few players that mean something to the team could help.  Jose is clearly a motivator in the clubhouse and pumps up the fans also.

Recap: Phillies 5, Mets 2

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets were defeated by the Phillies tonight 5-2

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Mike Pelfrey pitched a brilliant 7 2/3 innings allowing four hits, two runs, two walks and six strike outs
  • During this series the Mets bullpen has given up seven runs in four innings pitched
  • The Mets were working with a 2-1 lead going into the 8th, but with two outs the Phillies scored two runs to take the lead and didn't look back
  • Once again Jose Reyes had a multi hit night, and scored both Mets runs
  • The Mets stole five bases tonight

Some Thoughts

  • Its disappointing to see the Mets not be able to pick up the win for Pelfrey tonight after a stellar 116 pitch performance. For the bullpen to stagger in late innings again this seems questioning to many people, because before this the pen looked impeccable
  • Jason Bay seems to be getting back into the swing of things, tonight hitting an RBI single.
  • For the Mets to be getting the last three pitchers in a feared Phillies rotation is a blessing, however it really stings when the Mets cant pick up close games that they are in control of.  Blowing leads in late innings in both the games against the Phillies leaves a sour taste in all Met fans mouths.

Next For The Mets:

Tomorrow the Mets will look to escape a sweep with Jon Niese (3-5, 4.33 ERA) taking on Vance Worley (2-0, 2.14 ERA).  Projected game time is 1:10 pm
