The Long Ball

Posted by Jake Lublin

The long ball has seem to be really going for the Mets and have extremely picked up over this home stand.  Citi Field has been known for being a pitchers park, in its first couple of years.  The dimensions of the field are totally different to the ones at Shea.  The right field wall the 'Mo Zone' and the left field wall 'The Great Wall of Flushing' have kept many balls from leaving the yard.

Stadium Name Shea Stadium Citi Field
Opening Day April 17, 1964 April 13, 2009
Field dimensions (feet) Left field line- 338
Left field 1 - 358
Left Field 2 - 371
Left center - 396
Center field - 408
Right center - 396
Right field 2 - 371
Right field 1 - 358
Right field line- 338
Left field line- 335
Left field - 371
Left center - 384
Center field - 408
Right center - 415
Right field - 378
Right field line- 330
Fence heights (feet) Entire fence - 8 Left field foul pole - 12
Left field - 15
Left center - 15
Left of dead center - 8
Dead center - 8
Right of dead center - 8
Right center - 8
Right field - 18
Right field foul pole - 8

One of the biggest difference in the two parks are the wall sizes.  The left and right field walls make it harder for batters to hit it out, and for the fielders to play the balls. The weirdly formed dimensions also make it harder for the fielders.

Mets send DJ Carrasco to Triple-A-Buffalo

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets activated Chris Young today and took the option of sending down D.J. Carrasco instead of Dillon Gee.

Sandy Alderson had this to say about the matter

“We want the most effective group of pitchers we can have. [Dillon Gee] does have to move into a different role, but we want to see how he performs. In the meantime, we need to get Carrasco back to where we know he can be effective.”

Also Angel Pagan and Bobby Parnell will begin there rehab programs, with Ronny Paulino to be reevaluated tomorrow.

Recap: Mets 8, Diamondbacks 4

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets brought out the brooms today and defeated the D-backs 8 to 4 winning their 4th straight game.

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Jon Niese (1-3) earned his first win today, going 7 runs with the D-backs getting 3 runs off of 6 hits today off of Niese.
  • David Wright got the game started quickly with a two run home run, followed by another home run in the 4th.
  • Jason Pridie hit his first major league home run, in the third inning it was a three run home run.
  • Ike Davis continued his hot streak going 2-3 he is now batting .385 over his 8 game hitting streak.
  • D.J. Carrasco let up the first bullpen run in four games, however Tim Byrdak came on to get the Mets next 2 outs.
  • The Mets are now on a 4 game winning streak.

The Mets won their 4th game straight today, and ended their home stand at 4-2.  Jon Niese was the third Mets pitcher to last 7 innings and this is a huge improvement for the team.  Before this home stand the Mets starters were having trouble getting out of 5 innings.  The bullpen gave up their first run in 4 games today which also is a huge improvement.  Collins will now have to make the decision with the rotation because of Young's activation of the DL.

The Mets seemed to be hot with the long ball again.  Wright had his 16th career multi home with this he ties Carlos Beltran.  Also Jason Pridie hit his first major league home run today.  The Mets also slapped in some key RBIs, and big hits from Beltran and Davis.

Next For the Mets:

The Mets will take a well deserved day off tomorrow and then they travel to D.C to face the Nationals. Tuesday night at 7:05pm the projected starters are Chris Young (1-0, 1.46 ERA) for the Mets making his first start off the DL going against Jordan Zimmermann (1-3, 3.70 ERA) for the Nationals.

Armando Galarraga (3-0, 6.00 ERA) will get the start for the D-backs.  We all remember his almost perfect game last year by a bad call from Jim Joyce.  Galarraga got a great start to the 2011 season going 3-0.  The Mets faced Galarraga last year when he was a member of the Tigers and the Mets were defeated.

Recap: Mets 6, Diamondbacks 4

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets win their third straight game today their first three game winning streak of the year.

Box Score: click here

Key Info:

  • The Mets had one of there best hitting games of the year registering 15 hits off of D-backs starter Barry Enright.
  • Surprisingly all the 6 runs the Mets got came off of two out hits.
  • Daniel Murphy showed why Collins may have doubt in him, in the 4th inning he had a bad error that let the D-backs inch closer to the lead.
  • However Murph got it back when he drove in Justin Turner.
  • Dillion Gee (2-0) threw six strong innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 runs, 2 that were earned, he now moves to 2-0 as a Mets starter.
  • Jason Bay is back and looks better than ever as a Met. He had his first home run of the year along with a 2 RBI single
  • Ike Davis hit his third home run in three games today, going back to back with bay.  Davis' home run reached the pepsi porch going about 400 ft
  • Jason Isringhausen once again had a flawless 8th inning
  • Francisco Rodriguez worked around the trouble he put himself into, to earn his 4th save of the year.

The Mets win the third straight game today and looked very sharp.  In his second start for the Mets Dillion Gee let up 2 earned runs in 6 innings of work.  Gee looked in control of his game striking out 5 going along to earn the victory.  Something I like about Gee was that he walked off the field shaking his head after striking out Chris Young because he let the pitch get away from him.

The Mets earned 15 hits today off of Barry Enright, also the long ball seemed to be working for the Mets today when they hit back to back with Bay and Davis.  With Bay back the Mets have won 3 out of 3 games and have looked a lot better lately. The combination of the ejection against the Astros and Bay's return the Mets have gotten their game back.

Terry's Post Game Comments

  • He credits Dave Hudgens hitting coach for all the 2 out hits to drive in runs
  • Chris Young had a good bullpen session before the game
  • Murph got himself together after his error and he knew what he did wrong, he stayed focused and got the big hit to drive in Turner
  • Frankie Rodriguez got himself out of the trouble and he was very impressed with that
  • Dillion Gee has made the decision who to move out of the starting lineup when Young returns in Washington very hard
  • Gee wont stay for a bullpen spot if not in the rotation he will be sent back down to the minors
  • Murphy still does not have the starting job over Turner

Next For The Mets:

The Mets look to bring out the brooms tomorrow as they try to earn the sweep against the Diamondbacks tomorrow at Citi Field.  Projected time for the game to start is 1:10 pm, and the projected pitchers are Jon Niese (0-3, 5.87 ERA) for the Mets looking to pick up his first win against, Armando Galarraga (3-0, 6.00 ERA) for the D-Backs.
