The Mets lose in the late innings today against the Phillies

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Jon Niese (1-4) received a unfortunate loss today when pitching great.  He gave up 6 hits two walks and was charged with two runs.  Niese looked good until he let up at solo home run to John Mayberry, Jr.
  • Roy Halladay (4-1) started the game with 18 straight strikes, he let up 7 hits and one run in a complete game win.  This was Halladay's 60th complete game and now with the Phillies he is 6-0 against the Mets.
  • When Taylor Buchholz there were runners on 1st and 2nd, Buchholz gave up at single to Shane Victorino which loaded the bases.  Then Placido Polanco popped up a sac fly to drive in the go ahead run.
  • Carlos Beltran had the lone RBI today for the Mets.
  • David Wright to show some hope in the ninth but continued by 3 consecutive outs to Beltran, Jason Bay, and then an amazing play made by Howard to get Ike Davis for the last out.

Jon Niese had a great game today for the Mets, going six innings and only giving up 2 runs.  The only sore spot on the day would be John Mayberry Jr's solo home run off of him in the 7th, shortly after that continued by two walks he was pulled.  Unfortunately Buchholz could not get the Mets out of the inning and Niese suffered an unlucky loss.

For the Mets offense today was another dull day, clearly with Halladay pitching spectacular.  Halladay seemed to start off with out being able to throw a ball, he started with 18 strikes in a row.  Once the Mets would get a runner on they would not be able to drive them home.  Also Ike Davis could not extend his hit streak today.

Next For The Mets:

The Mets will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow, Chris Young (1-0 2.65 ERA) will be on the hill for the Mets tomorrow facing Cliff Lee (2-2, 4.18 ERA) of the Phillies.  The projected game time start is at 8:00 , this is the Sunday night baseball game of the Week on ESPN.

Recap: Phillies 10, Mets 3

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets lose the first game of a 3 game series tonight against the Phillies in bad fashion.

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Mike Pelfrey (1-3) started the game for the Mets and could not get it going.  Ryan Howard broke up Pelfrey's solid start with a 2 run home run in 4th.  In the 5th Ben Francisco hit a bases loaded two run single to help get Pelfrey pulled that inning.  Pelf went 4 1/3 innings letting up 4 runs on 8 hits.
  • After Ryan Howard's two run dinger off Pelfrey in the 4th he did not stop.  Then in the 6th against Dillon Gee Howard hit a grand slam to break the game open.
  • Gee came in on relief and its was his first relief appearance since 2007 in the minors.  He walked 2, hit 1 and allowed 1 hit.  However this one hit was the grand slam from Howard.
  • Vance Worley in his 6th MLB outing now filling in for injured Joe Blanton had a great game against the Mets.  Worley allowed 2 hits over 6 shut out innings also with 4 walks and 5 strike outs.
  • Ike Davis continued his hitting streak to 11 games.
  • Jason Pridie also tacked on a late 2 run home run in the 9th.

Pelfrey once again was a dud for the Mets in the starting role.  Met fans came into this season looking for Pelf to fill in as the ace of the team till Santana gets back.  Lets see so far he hasn't 1-3 with one solid outing against the D-backs all the others looked the same as tonight if not worse.  Clearly Pelfrey has not looked like we saw him last year.  Tonight Pelf started out strong and looked like he was going to have a solid game.  Then Howard's home run seemed to really rattle him.  The next inning allowing the basses to be loaded followed by Fransico's 2 run single did its job by getting Pelf out of the game and suffered his 3rd loss of the year.  Gee just got the unfortunate luck by having to face Howard with the basses loaded, to be honest getting into the predicament was his fault, but its so hard to get around Howard.

The Bats tonight were just not there and I don't even no what I can say about it.  They let Worley get in front of them and they just could not get hits.  The only sign of any type of life in the Mets offense was in the 9th which honestly didn't do too much.  On a good note Ike found a way to continue his hit streak to 11 games.

Next For The Mets:

The Mets will look for a win tomorrow in the second game of the series against the Phillies. The Mets will look to get a solid outing tomorrow from  Jon Niese (1-3, 5.10 ERA) who will be facing Roy Halladay (3-1, 2.41 ERA) the defending CY Young winner.  Projected time for the first pitch is 1:10 pm.

Recap: Nationals 4, Mets 3

Posted by Jake Lublin

Jacquelyn Martin/AP

And it comes to an end the Mets snap their 6 game winning streak tonight and fail to pick up the sweep against the Nationals.

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info

  • Chris Capuano (2-2) got the start for the Mets tonight going 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs off of 10 hits.
  • Livan Hernandez the former Met threw 105 pitches over a really strong 8 innings of work, letting up 3 runs.
  • Carlos Beltran miss played a ball hit in the third by Jayson Werth ended up being a ground rule double instead of the Mets getting out of the inning and was the Nationals first run.
  • Ike Davis now continues his streak to 10 game in a row with a hit, tonight he went 2-4 with a RBI.
  • The Nats Jerry Hairston, Jr. , Scotts brother scored from third on a sac bunt from Hernandez.
  • Pedro Beato looked sharp throwing two hitless innings out of the bullpen
  • A Mets rally was quickly answered by a solo home run by new father Ian Desmond who we did not see in the first two game of the series due to the birth of his son.

The Mets snap their 6 game winning streak tonight against the Nationals.  The Mets were down again late in the game and could not seem to notch out the win.  Capuano didn't have his best performance tonight allowing 4 runs on 10 hits.  Beato looked amazing tonight pitching two hitless innings.  Over the coarse of the season so far Beato looks to be one of the studs out of the bullpen

The Mets bats looked solid tonight making a run towards the middle of the game but could edge out a run in the later innings to tie it up.  The Mets defiantly had the opportunity with a two out single from Josh Thole and then the stolen base from pinch runner Chin-lung Hu but Drew Storen worked around it to get the save.   Ike Davis continues to look amazing now has his 10th straight game.

The Mets fought but could not come out with the W tonight, although I am very impressed with the team.  They have not been giving up and this looks very good.  After the lecture from Dickey the team has seemed to really turn it on, that and the ejection of Terry Collins in the game against the Astros the Mets have seemed to turn it around. Also Jason Bay suffers his first loss of the year with the Mets

Next For The Mets:

The Mets open up a three game series tomorrow night with the Phillies at Citizen's Bank Park.  Mike Pelfrey (1-2, 7.23 ERA) will start for the Mets tomorrow with the projected games first pitch at 7:05 pm.

Recap: Mets 6, Nationals 3

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets pick up the win tonight in the final inning, this moving their streak to 6 wins in a row!!!!!!!!

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • R.A. Dickey started the game and lasted 6 2/3 innings.  He let up 2 runs on 8 hits also striking out 3.
  • Justin Turner got an early RBI for the Mets driving in Mike Nickeas.
  • Ike Davis continued his 9 game hit streak off of a first called error to Jayson Werth that was changed to a hit.
  • In the last inning the Mets loaded the basses with Chin-lung Hu up and no outs.  HU drove in the run to tie the game with a sac fly, which also advanced the runners.  Josh Thole continued the late game rally with a fielders choice RBI that gave the Mets the lead.  Then once the Nats reloaded the bases by intentionally walking Jose ReyesDaniel Murphy ripped a double down the right field line driving in 2 giving the Mets a 3 run lead.
  • Murph also tacked on a solo pinch hit HR to tie the game for the Mets in the 8th.

The Mets stretch their steak to 6 games tonight winning the second game off the series against the Nats.  R.A. Dickey looked solid tonight  almost lasting 7 innings and only allowing 2 runs.  Once again K-Rod came on to earn the save at the end of the game and has been great to this Mets team over the winning streak.

The Mets went down in this game and did not seem to loose the passion to continue their winning streak.  For the Mets it came down to the last inning  and a couple unsung heros for the Mets came through in not so big ways. HUUUUUUU had a big sac-fly to tie the game, followed by another big RBI for Thole on a fielders choice to tie the game.  For Thole this is another big hit to help the Mets to victory.  Although the Mets had their one run lead they did not stop and double down the line from Murphy which scored 2 gave the Mets a 6-3 and the win.

Listening to SNY's Loud Mouths today I herd them say a tweet Jorge De La Rosa saying that the Mets have too much talent to fail, You never know maybe he has an interest of coming to Flushing .  Clearly all Mets faithful has not thought that in years past but I'm defiantly liking the lineup Collins has out there especially the first 6 batters.  Also the pitchers have stepped up big time which was strongly needed.

Terry's Post Game Comments:

  • Explanation on Reyes' controversial call his hand was off the bag at third
  • After the call the team did not get discouraged and continued to fight with the belief they would win.
  • He is proud of Hu who had the big sac fly
  • Thinks it was the most important win of the season
  • All around team effort
  • Ike is on fire and has shortened his swing a lot which has helped

Next For The Mets:

The Mets will try to sweep their second straight series tomorrow against the Nationals.  Chris Capuano (2-1, 5.95 ERA) will start for the Mets tomorrow facing Livan Hernandez (2-2, 3.48 ERA) the former Met.  Projected time for the first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.

Recap: Mets 6, Nationals 4

Posted by Jake Lublin

The Mets picked up the win tonight, giving them 5 wins in a row.

Box Score: Click Here

Key Info:

  • Chris Young in his first start off of the DL went 4.2 innings allowing 3 runs off of 4 hits.  All off his 3 runs were giving up by solo homers.
  • Ryota Igarashi (1-0) came in during the fifth inning to get the Mets out of a jam and earn his first win as a Met.
  • Josh Thole got the a big hit to left field that driving in Jason Bay and Ike Davis, that gave the Mets a 5-3 lead.
  • David Wright had a rip that knocked down Sean Burnett that turned into a RBI which gave the Mets some breathing room.
  • The Mets also reached base in the leadoff spot the first 5 innings of the game helping them immensely.
  • Francisco Rodriguez recorded his fifth save of the season tonight.

The Mets have now put together their first 5 game win streak off the season and seem to be on a roll.  In his first start since returning from the DL Chris Young looked a little shaky.  Giving up three runs off of 3 solo home runs Young seemed to no be able to get things moving towards the 5 inning.  Collins yanked him bringing in Ryota Igarashi who earned his first win as a Met and got them out of a huge jam with two runners on in a 3-3 game. It is always normal for pitchers to have to get into the grove of things after a stint on the DL.  It is hard to believe that Young will stay in this form after he has his amazing start to the season.

Josh Thole had a huge hit for the Mets tonight breaking them out of a 3-3 tie.  Thole showed manager Terry Collins that he has the potential to hit in big time situations and this hit will not of only had an impact on the Mets winning the game, it will move Thole forward developing as a player. Beltran, Bay, and Davis again looked great going 6-12 with 4 runs.  Clearly Jason Bay has made an impact on this team and they are now 5-0 since his return.

Credits to the bullpen for another great night of work.  Starting with Igarashi coming to get the Mets out of the jam, then two strong innings of work from Buchholz, and the 8th and 9 inning duo of Izzy and K-rod with another solid finish to the game.

Next For The Mets:

The Mets will face off with the Nationals tomorrow again trying to stretch their winning streak to 6 games. On the hill for both teams will be R.A. Dickey (1-3, 4.10 ERA) for the Mets and Tom Gorzelanny (0-2, 4.96 ERA) for the Nationals.  The projected first pitch time is 7:05 pm.
